Most of today was spent counting down the hours until we docked in Santander. While at breakfast I spotted Andy (from Bewdley) with his mates. Later we got together and with a few introductions got chatting about all things bikes and routes through Spain. It seems they are heading more south east than us, down into the Picos but then on to Segovia. They are back on the return ferry so will be good to swap tales about our experiences on the way home.
Finally, land ahoy in the distance from my cabin I could see the Picos appear as a great back drop on the horizon. Earlier I daw a huge pod of Dolphins swimming close to the bow. I reckon there was over 20 plus, quite an amazing sight. Above on the upper decks we saw the Wale watch eco team wrapped up against the cool breeze with their clipboards looking for Dolphins and Wales in the Bay of Biscay.
It took a while for us to dock (5.30/6 pm) and get moving, eventually heading down the Motorway out West before taking the N621 toward Potes. We hit a few dark clouds and eventually a bit of raim but nothing too concerning. On the way I passed some of the places I had recognised from past trips including San Vicente and Commillas to name a few.
What a ride down through the valley! I suddenly remembered why I love coming here to ride my bike. We haven't got into the Picos yet and we were flipping through switchback bends all the way to the hotel. Steve hasn't been over here to ride before but I could tell from the sound of his voice on the intercom he was already enjoying it.
Our nights stay is at the very impressive Hotel Del Oso just past Potes at Cosgaya. We arrived at about 7.30, time for a quick shower and then into the bar for a beer.
The food was great, real authentic northern Spanish. I went for the ribs tonight and a starter of bean stew and pork.
To round the day off we had a guy on a Spanish guitar singing to guests on the other table. Quite a gathering to listen to his lullaby too. All of the waters and waitresses came to listen and sing along (in Spanish of course)
Turns out, he is a famous Cuban Musician - Silvio Rodriguez
Tomorrow we head deep into the Picos mountains. Can't wait 👍
